I appreciate the delete arrow wake of a muskrat swimming silently across my pond. How nice that it lives its life in parallel with our own. But... my friends the muskrats ate all of the cattails that graced our pond. A few years, last summer in fact, Arrowhead arrived where the cattails had been and bloomed and made me laugh out loud with joy. Then the blessed muskrats came along and ate all the flowers. The next morning they'd eaten the stems above water line. And the day after that I couldn't even see underwater stems. I think they devoured every molecule. Haven't worked out how to feel about all this yet.

I like “the delete arrow wake.” I wonder if we could train muskrats to have an insatiable appetite for buckthorn? That would be easier than teaching the buckthorn to grow in ponds.
