I never thought about some seeds being hard for crossbills to eat. I had a white-winged crossbill at a platform feeder here in Iowa once, many years ago. As I play that back in my mind, I think it was laying its head almost sidewise on the feeder to pick up the seeds. Now I'm not sure whether I really remember that or if your story just put the image in my head so solidly it seems like a memory.
